State sports councils should incentivise national tournaments: Pandelela

KUALA LUMPUR – National diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong has suggested that states should match the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in terms of incentives for athletes in national-level competitions.

On Twitter, she called on state sports councils to offer the same amount of prize money given to Sukma winners to athletes forced to sit out the upcoming national games due to the cancellation of their events.

“Maybe the states can also offer the same Sukma-level rewards, such as the medal prize money and monthly allowance, to their athletes in the national-level games,” she said in response to an article by The Vibes.

Perak Athletics Association president Datuk Karim Ibrahim earlier told The Vibes that athletes forced to miss the Sukma would also lose out on their respective states sports council’s incentives, which are awarded to gold medallists.

Sukma, which is scheduled from September 29 to October 8, has seen several events cancelled by the Sukma Supreme Council due to lack of participation from states. – The Vibes, August 20, 2022.
