KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh urged athletes to be cautious of their interactions on social media platforms.
Yeoh said she hoped the National Sports Council (NSC) would also organise a series of courses to help athletes equip themselves with online social etiquette.
“We are organising many courses and programmes to help our athletes because each of them has a social media account.
We want them to be professional and maintain proper interaction with their fans.
“I am asking for their cooperation because otherwise we will not be able to do everything by ourselves,” she said.
Yeoh was met during a breaking fast ceremony hosted by the NSC in Bukit Jalil here, last night.
Recently, several athletes have been found to be using their social media platforms to express their emotions following losses in certain tournaments.
While it is normal to do so, some uploads from national athletes have however raised concern.
One example was national hockey player Hanis Nadiah Onn, who was suspended after she left a racist comment on attendees of Indian composer A.R. Rahman’s concert at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in January.
Meanwhile, independent men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia posted “I am f***ing done” after seemingly being frustrated with his performance at March’s German Open.
Most recently, independent men’s singles shuttler Soong Joo Ven received threatening and rude messages following his defeat at the qualifying round of Spain Masters last month. – The Vibes, April 13, 2023
