Kota Kinabalu: A storekeeper was sentenced to 35 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane by the High Court here on Tuesday for murdering an undocumented man in Penampang in 2023.
Judicial Commissioner Ratanah Devi Yusof Perumal sentenced Mohd Hazrul Migo Hassan, 32, after finding that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He was found guilty of killing Al Sam Amil between 4.44 am and 6.42 am on Dec 24, 2023, along the roadside of Jalan SMK Bahang, Penampang.
Mohd Hazrul was jointly charged with Najib Adam, who was discharged and acquitted without his defence being called on April 10, 2026, and seven other accomplices who remain at large, under Section 302 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The court ordered Mohd Hazrul to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest, with Deputy Public Prosecutor Lovely Natasha Charles prosecuting and Jamadi Saleh acting as his government-appointed counsel.
