Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old man was sentenced to 10 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for using a forged online payment receipt to buy a car audio system set worth RM1,100.
Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus meted out the sentence to Mohd Sobrie Eddie after he changed his plea to guilty midway through his trial.
Mohd Sobrie was charged with dishonestly using as genuine a forged DuitNow transfer receipt amounting to RM1,100 in front of a shop at Plaza Kingfisher, Inanam, on Oct 19.
The offence under Section 471 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 465 of the same Act, provides for a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Akaash Singh had urged the court to impose a deterrent custodial sentence and fine, arguing that the unrepresented accused only admitted to the offence after a prosecution witness had testified and that the victim had suffered financial loss.
