Streaming video services started out with an easy pitch: save money by subscribing to them instead of paying for an expensive cable or satellite TV subscription. While this might have been true years ago, streaming keeps getting more expensive, and it’s no longer the cost-cutting measure it once was. 

It can also lead to issues accessing the shows you want to watch, like the current contract dispute between YouTube TV and Disney. This has left subscribers scrambling to find a place to watch ESPN and ABC — even though it should be part of their YouTube TV subscription. New data from market research firm Park Associates estimates that the average streaming subscriber pays $109 per month for six services.
