Stretch of London's Oxford Street becomes pedestrian-only

  • A nearly one-kilometre stretch of Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street will be pedestrianised from Monday.
  • All vehicles, buses, taxis, cycles, and pedicabs are now banned from the zone, with deliveries restricted to between midnight and 7am.
  • Mayor of London Lord Sadiq Khan hailed the bold vision as a momentous occasion to boost economic growth and revitalise the West End.
  • The scheme is backed by major retailers such as Selfridges and John Lewis, though critics warn of potential traffic congestion on nearby roads.
  • This initial phase forms part of a wider transformation set to introduce new public squares, trees, seating, and lighting by spring 2027.
