Strictly Come Dancing contestant Lacey Turner has opened up about suffering a miscarriage while on the EastEnders set, saying she “just carried on” when it occurred.
The 38-year-old actor – who is now mum to two daughters, seven-year-old Dusty and 20-month-old Gipsy, and son Trilby, five – said she had two miscarriages before her children were born.
Turner, who shares her children with husband Matt Kay, told Prima magazine: “I had a miscarriage on the set of EastEnders. I had become so matter-of-fact about the subject because I just carried on.
“Looking back, it’s quite sad to know I reacted in such a way. Everyone was so supportive when I told them, and now, I’ve learned to be more in tune and speak up.”
The actor made her debut as Stacey Slater in 2004, when she was 16 years old. Her initial stint as the character lasted until 2010, when Slater was seen fleeing Walford on Christmas Day after confessing to the murder of Archie Mitchell.
After a four-year break – during which time she landed roles in the likes of supernatural series Bedlam, hit drama Our Girl and BBC favourite Call The Midwife – Turner returned to Albert Square from 2014 to 2025.
Her character bowed out again last year, this time moving to Brazil to start a new life closer to her off-screen brother, Sean.
Turner is making the most of her latest break from the soap, having signed up for Strictly Come Dancing.
Revealing she’s been asked to do the show multiple times in the past, Turner told Prima she’s signed up now because “I’m nearly 40 and I want to start doing things I’m scared of”.
“I want to go out of my comfort zone and push myself to see what I’m capable of,” she added. “Maybe it’s a midlife crisis, but I want to show my children that they can do anything they put their mind to.”
The actor is one of the 15 stars competing in this year’s new look series and Saturday (19 September) night’s launch show saw her paired with Italian dancer Vito Coppola.
While the celebrities are yet to perform in their first live show, Turner is one of the favourites to do well in the competition.
PaddyPower is currently offering odds of 13/2 on the actor lifting the Glitterball trophy. Just three other contestants – former Love Islander Dani Dyer (10/3), Emmerdale star Lawrence Robb (5/1) and Australian singer Delta Goodrem (11/2) – are currently being slated as more likely to win.
