By the time this column reaches readers today, Asia Rose Simpson will be counting down the hours until she steps onto the Miss World stage in Nha Trang, Vietnam, with the name of the Philippines across her sash — and, as she has beautifully put it, carried in her heart.
The 18-year-old Miss World Philippines 2026 is not entering the Sept. 5 grand final on hope and hometown support alone. She has already secured a place in the Top 40 after emerging as a continental winner in the pageant’s Head-to-Head Challenge. She also placed third in the talent competition, performing a dance about feeling lost and finding her way through faith.
Those victories give Filipinos even more reason to follow her journey into tonight’s grand coronation. They also affirm the qualities that first distinguished Simpson when she won the national crown at the Mall of Asia Arena in February. Before claiming the title, the Quezon City representative had already won the national pageant’s Talent and Beauty With a Purpose challenges, making it clear that she intended to bring more than a lovely face to the international stage.
As pageant-loving Filipinos wait to see how far she will go, a series of portraits shared with The Manila Times Lifestyle and created with Peculiar Eyewear offers an intriguing glimpse of the young woman behind the crown. The collaboration presents Simpson through two very different visual concepts, both playing on the idea of seeing beyond what is immediately before us.
In the first, she is every inch the queen in a red gown and crown, yet the drama lies in the details surrounding her. Optical lenses fill the composition with mirrors — according to the concept provided by Peculiar Eyewear — symbolizing the woman she was before the title and recognition. Wearing a pair of delicate frames from the brand, Simpson appears poised between those two selves: the young dreamer looking forward and the beauty queen looking back.
The second image is bolder and more playful. This time, Simpson wears oversized Peculiar Eyewear sunglasses amid a sculptural creation fashioned from the brand’s repurposed packaging. What might otherwise have been discarded is turned into fashion, giving an unexpected material its own moment in front of the camera.
There is something fitting about that second look for a titleholder whose pageant journey has been anchored in purpose. It suggests that beauty can hold attention without being wasteful, and that creativity begins when someone sees possibility where others might see very little.
For Peculiar Eyewear CEO and co-founder Isaac Saliendra, supporting Simpson is rooted in more than the usual brand-and-beauty-queen partnership. He knows firsthand how poor eyesight can affect a young person, having struggled to see the classroom blackboard as a student.
That experience later shaped his desire to make quality eyewear more accessible, with the company since extending its community work to provide eyeglasses to students in Cavite, among others.
Simpson carries a youth-centered advocacy of her own. Through her SED (Sports, Exercise and Dance) initiative, she uses sports and dance to promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being of young people. While distinct, their advocacies meet in the belief that young lives can change when given the tools, support and opportunity to move forward.
It is also why Saliendra speaks less about Simpson’s crown than the character of the young woman wearing it.
“I like her not because she is a queen, but because I can see her genuineness. I can see how she represents Filipino values,” he said.
Simpson herself has placed those values at the heart of her message.
“Stepping onto the stage, I carry the bayanihan spirit—the unity of my country and my people,” she said, invoking the Filipino tradition of communal unity and cooperation.
Today, all the preparation, victories, prayers and portraits lead to one stage in Vietnam. How the competition ends remains to be seen, but Asia Rose Simpson has already given Filipinos a young woman worth watching and a journey worth seeing through.
For now, all eyes are on Asia.
