Strong earthquake strikes New Guinea, Papua New Guinea

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — A strong earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck New Guinea, Papua New Guinea (PNG) at 2.04am today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department, in a statement, said the quake with a depth of 93 kilometres (km) occurred 83 km southwest of Wiwak, PNG.

However, it did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the waters of the South China Sea at 3.32am Monday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

According to Xinhua, the epicentre, with a depth of 600 km, was monitored at 6.5 degrees north latitude and 115.8 degrees east longitude, the centre said in a statement.
