Subahan to request for hockey development fund from PM

SEPANG – The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) are expected to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob soon, to appeal for funds to develop the sport further, especially the national squad.

MHC President Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the confederation was confident that the government would support the national body for hockey, by providing funds to send the team for training abroad.

Subahan said with support and funds from the government, the team can improve its proficiency and skills both individually and as a team, to bring honour to the country when competing in international competitions.

“God willing, we will meet the prime minister soon to appeal for funds. Though we will appeal for funds, it will be up to the prime minister to decide,” he told reporters when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here today.

Subahan was at the airport to welcome the victorious men’s indoor hockey team that returned from Bangkok, Thailand after winning the 2022 Asian Indoor Hockey Championships, which ended yesterday.

The women’s indoor hockey team that finished in third place to win the bronze medal also arrived together with the men’s team.

However, Subahan did not reveal the amount that MHC would appeal.

In the men’s category, Malaysia beat defending champion Iran 3-2 in a shootout to win the title for the first time. Both teams were tied 4-4 after full time. – Bernama, August 16, 2022
