Enzo Maresca faces a huge challenge as he succeeds Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Here, the Press Association looks at how others have fared coming after successful, long-serving managers.

David Moyes (Manchester United)

Whoever succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson after 26 years at Manchester United was always likely to face an uphill task. Yet it was not an opportunity that could be turned down and, with 11 years’ top-flight experience at Everton behind him, Moyes felt ready for the step up. He was recommended by his fellow Scot Ferguson and was viewed by the club as a continuity option, but he was sacked just 10 months into a six-year contract after failing to make the desired impact.

Unai Emery (Arsenal)

After three Europa League triumphs with Sevilla and a French title with Paris Saint-Germain, the Spaniard boasted an excellent track record when he was handed the reins at Arsenal at the end of Arsene Wenger’s 22-year tenure. Despite a Europa League final appearance, he failed to correct flaws that had become evident in Wenger’s final years. He lasted just 18 months before being shown the door after a winless run of seven games, the club’s longest in 27 years.

Arne Slot (Liverpool)

Many expected the Dutchman to encounter similar difficulties as he took over from the formidable Jürgen Klopp after nine years at Anfield. He initially defied those doubts, blending Klopp’s high-intensity style with a more disciplined approach to guide the club to the Premier League title. However, results and performances dipped in his second season following a problematic squad overhaul and he was ultimately sacked at the end of the campaign.
