Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off the Olympic Run here today evening to mark International Olympic Day, with around 200 athletes participating in the event held in both men’s and women’s categories.

Extending his greetings on the occasion, Sukhu reiterated that the state government was committed to promoting sports and providing better opportunities and facilities for athletes across Himachal Pradesh.

“Sports are also a form of education. Just as students strive for excellence in academics, athletes should aim to bring pride and recognition to the state through their achievements in sports," he said.

The Chief Minister said modern sports infrastructure had already been developed in Bilaspur, Kangra, Una and Hamirpur districts to support young athletes. He added that a Centre of Excellence for Sports was being established at Nadaun in Hamirpur district at a cost of Rs 150 crore and was expected to be completed by October this year.

Highlighting the role of sports in personality development, Sukhu said participation in sports helped inculcate discipline, teamwork and a competitive spirit among youth – qualities essential for success in life. He also called upon young people to actively support the state government’s anti-drug campaign and contribute towards building a healthy and drug-free society.

Sukhu further said the state government had taken a historic step by increasing cash incentives for medal winners in international sporting events. “The cash reward has been increased from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 3 crore," he added.
