Federal Territories gymnast Cassidy Tan Jia Xin retained her SUKMA rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around gold after scoring 98.950 points in Selangor.
FEDERAL TERRITORIES rhythmic gymnast Cassidy Tan Jia Xin successfully defended her individual all-around gold medal at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) after topping the Selangor 2026 edition with a total of 98.950 points (pts) today.
Cassidy underlined her dominance by recording the highest scores in three of the four apparatus – hoop, ball and ribbon – en route to retaining the title at Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), here.
Selangor’s Sam Lee Li Momoka settled for silver with 95.350 pts, while Cassidy’s Federal Territories teammate Wong Poe Syuen completed the podium with 95.050 pts.
The victory was Cassidy’s second gold medal of the Games after she helped Federal Territories clinch the rhythmic gymnastics team title yesterday alongside Poe Syuen, Rhea Dhaliwall and Isabella Arissa Mohd Khalimi Ashraf.
The triumph also marked a second consecutive individual all-around crown for Cassidy who first captured the title at the 2024 SUKMA in Sarawak when she was just 13.
“Of course, I feel very grateful and happy that I was able to achieve this second gold for Federal Territories in the individual all-around.
“There are definitely some areas which I could have done better today, but overall, I think I tried my best and I’m very happy with the result. I know that I have to work harder for the future if I want to continue to represent Malaysia and Federal Territories to the best of my abilities,” she told reporters after the event.
At the previous edition, Cassidy accumulated 104.900 pts to emerge champion after also topping three apparatus – hoop, ball and ribbon.
She was also part of the Federal Territories squad that won the team gold medal at the 2024 edition before adding two more gold medals in the ball and ribbon apparatus finals.
Reflecting on her progress over the past two years, Cassidy said she is now a more confident gymnast with more advanced routines and improved technique.
“I think now my routines are definitely more advanced and of course, the Code of Points has also changed. There are some changes here and there with what elements we can and cannot do but overall, I feel like this time I was more confident and, of course, my technique has improved thanks to my coaches,” she said.
With Selangor 2026 set to be her final SUKMA, the 15-year-old is already looking ahead to making the step up to the senior ranks next year, with the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia firmly in her sights.
“I hope that I can work hard so that I can represent Malaysia next year. I know that it will be a challenging path ahead, so I’m prepared to work and try my hardest to learn and adapt to the senior routines,” said the Alice Smith School student, who is the younger of two siblings.
Meanwhile, Selangor, represented by Gan Yi Xin, Ker Jia Wei, Ker Jia Wen, Lor Suen Nah, Rachel Chua Hui Xin and Tan Sher Myn, emerged champions in the group exercise after accumulating 35.650 pts.
Federal Territories took silver with 34.400 pts, while Perak settled for bronze with 33.750 pts.
The two-day rhythmic gymnastics competition, which offered a total of three gold medals, concluded today, with Federal Territories emerging as overall champions after winning two golds, one silver and one bronze.
