The Sultan of Pahang, Al‑Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al‑Mustafa Billah Shah, has called for firm but fair action against individuals who insult religion, stressing that justice must be upheld without emotion or prejudice.
In a statement issued on Saturday (February 28), His Royal Highness reminded the public that Islam, as the religion of the Federation, holds a special and elevated position in the country and must be respected by all. Any act that insults the faith, undermines its sanctity, or spreads hatred should not be taken lightly and must be addressed in accordance with the law.
A widely condemned incident in Malaysia involving a university student stepping on a copy of the Quran has sparked national outrage and prompted swift action from authorities. Several individuals believed to be involved have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
At the same time, the Sultan emphasised that enforcement must be guided by facts, clear legal provisions, and principles of justice, not by pressure or emotional reactions. Authorities, he said, carry the responsibility to act decisively against wrongdoing, but in a manner that remains fair, measured, and compassionate.

He also underscored the importance of safeguarding harmony in Malaysia’s diverse society. Religious issues, he cautioned, can easily disrupt peace if handled irresponsibly or exploited by parties with hidden agendas. Maintaining unity and mutual respect is therefore a shared responsibility.
The Sultan further reminded leaders at every level to demonstrate integrity and principled leadership, ensuring all actions taken are lawful and uphold justice.
“I hope that all Malaysians will continue to respect religious sensitivities and work together to preserve the long‑standing harmony that forms the foundation of the nation’s strength.”
