KUALA LUMPUR - Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd (BHPetrol) and MARA Incorporated Sdn Bhd (MARA Inc) have launched a phased project to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at 50 BHPetrol stations across the Klang Valley, with completion targeted by the end of this year.
MARA Inc chief executive officer Faizul Idzhar Ahmad Yazi said the company is committed to ensuring that the solar systems at all 50 BHPetrol stations are completed and fully operational before the end of the year.
"We will complete all 50 petrol stations, meaning they will be fully operational.
"After installation, we need to carry out testing and commissioning, obtain the necessary licensing approvals, and complete several other processes before the system can begin operating and generating electricity," he said during the launch of the Renewable Energy Project between BHPetrol and MARA Inc.
BHPetrol acting chief executive officer Fardzi Shah Razali said the company operates about 420 petrol stations throughout Peninsular Malaysia. However, the target for solar system installations next year is still under discussion. He explained that not all BHPetrol stations are suitable for solar installations, as feasibility depends on the location.
"We are still discussing next year's target because, out of the 420 stations, not all are suitable for solar system installation. For renewable energy, we need to ensure that a station has sufficient open space and receives adequate sunlight. Some stations are located in shaded areas, particularly in urban locations or near condominiums and high-rise buildings. These stations are therefore not suitable," he added.
As of July 2026, a total of 16 BHPetrol stations have completed installation and are operating with solar PV systems, while the remaining 34 stations will be implemented in phases until the overall project target is achieved.
The 1.4-megawatt peak (MWp) solar PV system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1,347 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually once the project is fully completed. This initiative will strengthen a low-carbon economy and promote more sustainable business practices, in line with the government's goal to accelerate the transition to green technology through the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Fardzi Shah said BHPetrol is working to reduce operating costs, not only at the corporate level but also for BHPetrol station operators. "We are continuously striving to reduce operating costs, with a target of achieving at least a 10% reduction in energy bills," he added.
Meanwhile, Faizul Idzhar said MARA Inc is also expanding its business in the renewable energy sector, particularly solar energy, not only through its collaboration with BHPetrol but also across institutions under MARA, including its colleges. He said MARA Inc has been entrusted with implementing solar system installations at these institutions and is also involved in large-scale solar (LSS) projects with a combined capacity exceeding 100 megawatts (MW) on the East Coast.
"Solar is an industry with tremendous potential. In fact, I believe that one day almost every building in Malaysia will install solar systems because, logically, they can significantly reduce electricity costs. The savings are not just for one year; they can be enjoyed over a period of 10 to 20 years with stable and predictable costs," he added. - BERNAMA
