SANDAKAN: The lesser-known Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) in Kinabatangan drew attention from birdwatchers and conservationists at the 15th Borneo Bird Festival 2025, held at the Rainforest Discovery Centre over the weekend.
Spanning 2,632 hectares of riparian and peatland forests, the area shelters 28 protected bird species, including the endangered white-crowned hornbill, wrinkled hornbill, and Storm’s stork.
Situated along a 30km stretch of the Kinabatangan River, SPnCA links the Pin Supu Forest Reserve and the Kinabatangan Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, providing a vital corridor for wildlife.
SKG Green Sdn Bhd, which manages conservation work within the area, showcased its ongoing efforts to balance oil palm operations with biodiversity protection during the two-day event.
Beyond its birdlife, the conservation area is also home to 17 protected mammals, such as the Bornean orangutan and proboscis monkey, alongside more than 500 plant species unique to Borneo.
