Kota Damansara hospital expands specialist care, international patient services, plans for advanced cancer treatment

Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD) marks a new chapter in specialist healthcare with its official launch, less than two years after beginning operations in December 2024.

Located in Kota Damansara, the hospital is the fourth tertiary hospital under Sunway Healthcare Group and is positioned to serve communities across the Klang Valley, particularly those in the northern, northwestern and western areas.

Beyond serving local patients, SMCD is also developing its role as a healthcare destination for expatriates and international patients seeking specialist treatment in Malaysia.

Bringing specialist care closer

The hospital’s launch comes as demand for specialised healthcare continues to grow, driven by an ageing population, non-communicable diseases and increasingly complex medical needs.

Officiating the ceremony, Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said investments in private healthcare support the state’s plans under Rancangan Selangor Kedua to build a caring, liveable, sustainable and resilient state.

He noted strengthening healthcare capacity and improving access to quality treatment remain important as the state’s healthcare needs become more complex.

For Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long, SMCD’s location and growing range of specialist services are intended to give patients access to more complex treatment closer to home.

The hospital combines specialist and subspecialist services with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, including AI-enabled and robotic-assisted solutions. Its focus is also on multidisciplinary care, bringing different areas of expertise together when patients require more complex treatment.

SMCD’s next phase of development could further expand its specialist capabilities.

Four acres have been earmarked for future expansion, with plans being evaluated for a standalone Sunway Sanctuary focused on senior living and a dedicated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre.

The proposed centre is expected to include advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities such as a cyclotron, PET-CT, linear accelerators and a CT simulator.

Plans also include a Proton Beam Therapy Centre, which Sunway Healthcare Group says would be the first of its kind in Malaysia.

If developed, the facilities would further position SMCD as part of a broader healthcare destination offering more specialised treatment options under one ecosystem.

Designed for accessibility

The hospital’s location within Kota Damansara also gives patients and visitors access to wider transport, retail and lifestyle facilities. A new ramp connecting Persiaran Surian to Jalan PJU 5/1 provides more direct access to SMCD and Bandar Sunway Damansara.

A link bridge to Sunway Nexis connects the hospital with Surian MRT station, as well as nearby retail, dining and lifestyle amenities.

The connectivity also supports SMCD’s international patient ambitions. Subang Airport is nearby, while Kuala Lumpur International Airport can be reached by road via the North-South Expressway.

For international patients, the hospital’s International Patient Centre provides support throughout the treatment journey. Dedicated nurses and translators assist with specialist appointments, treatment coordination, admissions and communication.

The hospital also caters to expatriates living and working in Malaysia, offering specialist care, preventive health services, advanced surgery, rehabilitation and multidisciplinary treatment.

Building an integrated healthcare network

Since opening its doors, SMCD has recorded strong operational growth, achieving its first ebitda-positive month within nine months of commencing operations – significantly earlier than the industry’s typical three- to five-year ramp-up period.

CEO Jasmine Lau Mooi Hun said the hospital has grown in both its range of services and the trust placed in it by patients, partners and the wider community.

The next stage will see SMCD expand its continuum of care through additional services nearby.

Sunway Specialist Centre Damansara, an ambulatory care facility located across the road from the hospital, will complement its existing services, while the planned Sunway Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2027.

Together, the facilities are intended to create a more integrated healthcare ecosystem in Kota Damansara, bringing specialist treatment, ambulatory services, rehabilitation, preventive care and complementary healthcare options closer to the communities they serve.
