The tragic death of a foreign female student at a condominium in Bandar Sunway has once again raised concerns about the safety of university students living away from home.

According to police, the woman, who was in her 20s and studying at a private higher education institution in Petaling Jaya, was found dead with multiple injuries at a condominium in Bandar Sunway. A foreign man in his 20s was arrested at the scene to assist investigations, and the case is being investigated as murder.

While authorities continue their investigation and the facts surrounding the case remain unclear, the incident has sparked renewed discussion about student safety in and around university communities.

A Growing Concern

For many students, especially those studying far from home or from overseas, university represents independence and opportunity. However, it also comes with new risks.

Areas surrounding major universities often have a high concentration of young people living alone, sharing apartments with strangers, returning home late from classes, part-time jobs, or social activities. While many university towns are generally safe, students are increasingly becoming targets of crimes ranging from theft and scams to harassment and violent incidents.

In recent years, reports of robberies, stalking, house break-ins, and assaults near student housing have become recurring headlines across Malaysia. Although such incidents remain relatively rare compared to the overall student population, each case serves as a reminder that safety cannot be taken for granted.

International Students Face Additional Challenges

Foreign students may be particularly vulnerable.

Many arrive in Malaysia with limited local knowledge, unfamiliarity with neighbourhoods, and smaller support networks. Some may hesitate to report suspicious behaviour or seek help due to language barriers or concerns about immigration status.

Universities invest heavily in attracting international students, but ensuring their safety extends beyond the classroom. It requires cooperation between educational institutions, property management companies, local authorities, and law enforcement agencies.

The Role of Universities

Universities cannot control every aspect of student life, especially when students live off-campus. However, they can play a larger role in promoting safety awareness.

Regular safety briefings, emergency contact systems, mental health support, self-defence workshops, and stronger partnerships with local police can help students better protect themselves.

Institutions should also provide clearer guidance on choosing accommodation, recognising warning signs of abusive relationships, and responding to emergencies.

A Wake-Up Call

The death of a young student in Bandar Sunway is a tragedy that has shocked many within the education community. As investigations continue, it serves as a sobering reminder that safety should remain a priority for everyone involved in university life.

Parents send their children to university to build a future. Students travel across cities and countries in pursuit of education and opportunity. Ensuring that they can learn, live, and thrive in a safe environment is a responsibility shared by institutions, communities, and society as a whole.

No student should have to fear for their safety while pursuing their dreams.
