A foreign man was apprehended by police for allegedly sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl at a supermarket in Kompleks Bukit Jambul yesterday. The man, believed to be in his 30s and of Nepalese origin, lacked valid travel documents, according to Timur Laut district police chief ACP Razlam Abd Hamid.
The incident unfolded around 6:50 pm while the girl and her mother were waiting in line at a checkout counter. Suddenly, the suspect approached the girl and reportedly pressed himself against her back. The girl's mother promptly raised the alarm, alerting nearby shoppers who intervened and subdued the suspect, Razlam disclosed.
Despite attempting to flee, the suspect was swiftly apprehended by members of the public in the vicinity of another supermarket before being handed over to law enforcement. In the process, the suspect sustained facial injuries and was subsequently taken to Penang Hospital for medical attention.
To aid in the investigation, the suspect has been detained for three days under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, Razlam confirmed.
The prompt action of the girl's mother and vigilant members of the public ensured swift justice in this distressing incident.
