SEN. Bong Go welcomed a Supreme Court ruling affirming the release of mandated funds for sports development, noting that world-class athletes are built from the community level.
”If we want to have world-class athletes, we must start at the grassroots level. This is where discipline, perseverance and sportsmanship are cultivated,” Go said, speaking in Filipino.
The Supreme Court’s final and executory resolution has affirmed its 2024 decision directing the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. to remit a portion of their earnings to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), as mandated by Republic Act 6874, to support the development of sports nationwide.
”This is a big step to ensure continued support for sports development, especially at the grassroots, where the talent of our youth is first developed,” the senator said, noting that reliable and sustained funding is crucial to long-term sports development.
The chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports and the Senate Committee on Youth said the ruling would help expand grassroots programs and support systems for aspiring athletes in communities nationwide. He also urged the PSC to ensure transparency and the proper use of funds.
”It is our responsibility to make sure that this funding really goes to the athletes and to programs that will directly help their training and development,” Go said.
The ruling comes as the government moves to accelerate the upgrading of sports infrastructure nationwide.
