MANILA, Philippines — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) urged the public to sustain the fire of EDSA as the country prepares to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the People Power revolution on February 25.
In a pastoral letter released Tuesday entitled “Remember the Wonders the Lord Has Done” (Psalm 105:5), the CBCP implored Filipinos to undertake three sacred duties: to remember, to repent, and to respond.
“The fire of EDSA, set aflame forty years ago, is our task to sustain,” it said, urging Filipinos to retell the story of EDSA to reignite the passion of the future generation in pursuing the common good.
The CBCP also emphasized the importance of remembering the nameless heroes of EDSA, to commemorate how they reshaped the nation without bloodshed.
“Millions of Filipinos, from across the country, gathered under the protective mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary and her Son, Jesus. Clutching and praying the rosary, offering masses, singing hymns. We, as a people, stood shoulder-to-shoulder, faced tanks and soldiers with nothing but unyielding faith in our hearts,” the CBCP added.
