KUALA LUMPUR – World number four shuttler Lee Zii Jia made it through to the Swiss Open quarterfinals after he beat Nhat Nguyen 21-19, 21-15 today.
This match was a walk in the park for Zii Jia as he finished off Nguyen in 51 minutes at the St Jakobshalle Arena in Basel.
Zii Jia will either face Taiwan’s Chia Hao Lee or Mithun Manhunath from India in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
However, it was the end of the road for world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik as they were defeated by Japan’s Kira Koga-Taichi Saito. The Japanese pair won 17-21, 21-16, 21-17.
This is the second time Koga-Saito have denied the Malaysian pair in the second round, with the most recent being earlier this month at the German Open when they won 21-13, 21-18.
The 25th-ranked Japanese duo will now either face Taiwan’s Lu Ching Yao-Yang Po Han or China’s Ren Xiang Yu-Tan Qiang for their shot at the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, world number eight men’s doubles team Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi defeated Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura 26-24, 15-21, 21-17 and booked their spot in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
At the same time, mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei also made it to the last eight after winning 11-21, 21-14, 21-14 against He Ji Ting-Du Yue of China. – The Vibes, March 23, 2023
