SWITZERLAND transformed a tense, goalless contest into a spectacular victory with four goals in the final 16 minutes, as substitute Johan Manzambi inspired a remarkable 4-1 triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina to breathe new life into their FIFA World Cup campaign.
With both nations having opened the tournament with draws against Qatar and Canada respectively, victory was crucial in Los Angeles. Switzerland eventually broke Bosnia's stubborn resistance through an inspired tactical reshuffle by head coach Murat Yakin, whose triple substitution proved decisive.
For more than an hour, Switzerland dominated possession but struggled to penetrate Bosnia's disciplined defensive block. Dan Ndoye repeatedly threatened down the right flank, while Remo Freuler, Michel Aebischer and Granit Xhaka all contributed to sustained attacking pressure without finding a breakthrough.
Bosnia, led in attack by Edin Džeko and Ermedin Demirović, relied largely on counter-attacks and long passes, although Gregor Kobel was rarely seriously troubled during a cagey first half that ended scoreless.
The turning point arrived in the 71st minute when Yakin introduced Johan Manzambi, Djibril Sow and Rubén Vargas, a tactical gamble that immediately transformed the contest.
Just three minutes later, Vargas delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where Manzambi reacted quickest to fire a first-time finish into the net and finally break Bosnia's resistance.
Switzerland tightened their grip on the match in the 80th minute when Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemović received a straight red card after bringing down Breel Embolo, who was through on goal.
The numerical advantage quickly proved decisive. Four minutes later, Embolo displayed excellent composure before squaring the ball for Vargas, who calmly slotted home to double Switzerland's lead.
Manzambi then capped a dream appearance from the bench in the 90th minute, finishing another incisive move after being picked out by Vargas to make it 3-0 and complete his impressive brace.
Bosnia briefly responded in stoppage time when substitute Ermin Mahmić rifled a thunderous volley beyond Kobel after capitalising on a defensive clearance, reducing the deficit to 3-1.
However, Switzerland had the final word deep into added time. After Amar Memić fouled Djibril Sow inside the penalty area, captain Granit Xhaka confidently converted the resulting spot-kick to complete an emphatic 4-1 victory and secure three valuable points.
