THE frozen imported chicken syndicate targeted under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Op Chick is believed to have been operating for about two decades.
MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said intelligence indicated that the syndicate’s activities could be traced back to 2006.
However, he said MACC only began gathering intelligence to identify those involved early this month.
“The syndicate is believed to have been operating since 2006,” he said.
Abd Halim said the intelligence operation culminated in action on Aug 11 against the syndicate, which allegedly smuggled frozen chicken from China and Poland into the country.
“The syndicate is suspected of bribing officers at a port in Kota Kinabalu to facilitate its activities.
“The goods in the containers were declared as items such as vegetables,” he said, adding that the consignments also allegedly bypassed the prescribed inspection process.
Abd Halim said the operation was conducted by the Special Projects Branch of MACC’s Intelligence Division, in cooperation with the Sabah Veterinary Services Department and Customs Department.
