TECHNOLOGY solutions expert Synology is expanding the role of its BeeStation Plus from a simple personal cloud alternative into a self-contained home and workspace monitoring system, leaning heavily on privacy and control. The updated setup pairs the device with Synology cameras and the new BeeCamera mobile app, allowing users to run a surveillance system without relying on cloud storage or paying recurring fees.
That shift lands at a time when many users are growing wary of subscription-heavy smart home ecosystems. Video monitoring, in particular, has become synonymous with monthly payments and off-site storage. Synology’s approach cuts against that model by keeping footage local, effectively turning BeeStation Plus into a private hub that handles both files and surveillance in one place.
Originally designed as a plug-and-play storage solution, BeeStation Plus now adds live monitoring and event tracking into the mix. Through the BeeCamera app, users can access live feeds, receive alerts, and review recorded footage whether they are at home or away. When used with compatible Synology cameras, the system applies on-device AI to detect people, pets, vehicles, and possible intrusion events, reducing the need for constant manual monitoring.
“BeeStation Plus is built to be a digital hub for home and for small teams,” said Yi Ma, Senior Product Manager of BeeStation. “With video becoming a bigger part of everyday life, BeeStation offers a simple way to manage monitoring alongside files and photos, keeping everything private and under the user's control.”
Up to four cameras can be connected to a single BeeStation Plus, with settings that can be tailored depending on whether the system is used in a household or a small business. The BeeCamera app allows users to refine alerts based on AI detection categories, set recording schedules, and define activity zones to avoid unnecessary notifications. Storage allocation can also be managed, although capacity is shared with files and photo libraries, which means available space will vary depending on usage.
All recorded events are compiled into a single, searchable timeline. Users can filter incidents by type and save important clips into a dedicated collection so they are not automatically overwritten. This is useful both for practical documentation and for preserving moments that might otherwise be lost in routine retention cycles.
The setup is clearly aimed at families who want to keep track of their homes, as well as small shops and micro-businesses looking for a straightforward monitoring solution without ongoing costs. Access can be extended to up to eight users, each able to view live feeds, receive alerts, and review past events.
There are, however, some trade-offs. The system is limited to four cameras per unit, and storage is not dedicated solely to surveillance. It also works within Synology’s own ecosystem, requiring compatible camera models rather than offering broader third-party support. For some users, those constraints may offset the appeal of going subscription-free.
The BeeCamera app requires BeeStation Plus running BeeStation OS 1.5 or later and currently supports Synology camera models including the CC400W, BC500, and TC500.
