Sze Fei-Izzuddin, Pearly-Thinaah keep badminton medal hopes alive

NAGOYA: Malaysia’s national professional men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, are one step away from securing a medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games after advancing to the quarter-finals with a straight-set victory over Japan’s Yugo Kobayashi-Takuro Hoki today.

In the match held at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium, the national pair faced no major difficulties in securing a 21-19, 21-16 victory.

The national pair will face either China’s Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang or Thailand’s Chaloemphon Charoenkitamorn-Worrapol Thongsa-nga in tomorrow’s quarter-final. The two pairs are scheduled to meet in another match later today.

Meanwhile, another national men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Tee Kai Wun, failed to reach the quarter-finals after losing to South Korea’s world number one pair, Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae, 21-19, 21-16.

In the women’s doubles event, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah lived up to expectations by defeating Thailand’s Napapakorn Tungkasatan-Hathaihip 21-8, 21-12.

The national pair are scheduled to face India’s Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly, who caused an upset by defeating the host country’s pair 24-22, 21-18.

In the men’s singles event, national representative Justin Hoh failed to advance to the quarter-finals after losing to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew 21-14, 21-14.
