Police have taken statements from 13 individuals to aid their investigation into a recent inmate riot at Taiping Prison, which resulted in injuries to three wardens last Thursday.
According to Taiping district police chief ACP Mohamad Nasir Ismail, statements were obtained from eight prisoners, aged between 24 and 45, believed to be connected to the riot, and three injured wardens.
"We also recorded statements from witnesses who saw the incident, including CCTV footage, and the doctor who treated the wardens," he stated.
The incident occurred around 3:30 in the afternoon, stemming from an altercation between a prisoner and a warden. The three wardens, aged between 27 and 48, were attempting to quell a disturbance involving eight prisoners who had returned to the prison after completing their quarantine at the Kamunting Correctional Centre.
"The investigation revealed that one of the prisoners argued with a warden, dissatisfied after being reprimanded for provoking the officer," ACP Mohamad Nasir explained.
He emphasized that the situation is now under control, classifying the incident as a minor riot. The authorities took appropriate measures following prison procedures. The three wardens, who sustained minor injuries, received prompt medical treatment at Taiping Hospital, while the involved prisoners remained unharmed.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code, addressing rioting using weapons, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years, a fine, or both if convicted.
Law enforcement officials have been diligently gathering evidence and statements from all relevant parties to establish a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the prison disturbance. The incident highlights the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining order and security within correctional facilities, emphasizing the importance of proper investigation and adherence to legal procedures in such cases.
In the coming weeks, the police are expected to complete their investigation, and the findings will be crucial in determining any charges brought against the individuals involved in the riot. Authorities aim to ensure that justice is served while upholding the principles of law and order within the prison system.
