SEMPORNA: Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Assistant Minister Datuk Seri Anil Sandhu said when selecting players for a strong volleyball team consider discipline, commitment and dedication as well as talent and skill.
He said the approach would ensure those chosen are serious about improving and can help raise the standard of volleyball in Sabah.
“Talent alone is not enough. It must be backed by discipline, dedication and commitment. All these aspects deserve attention when players are selected,” he told reporters after officiating at the closing of the State-level Under-16 Youth Volleyball Championship at the Semporna Community Hall Arena on Sunday.
Ten teams took part in the championship, which gave young players the chance to test their abilities, gain experience and showcase their talent at a higher level.
Anil said such tournaments were not only a platform for competition but also important for identifying new talent with the potential to represent the State in future.
He urged the players not to be complacent with their current achievements, but to keep honing their skills, maintain discipline and show strong commitment in every training session and match.
“Do your best and keep striving to be even better in sport. Every championship is a chance to learn, improve your skills and build a future as an athlete,” he said.
Anil also assured that any applications for assistance and matters relating to sports development would be supported and forwarded for consideration and approval by the relevant authorities.
“Continued support for sports development is important to ensure young athletes get better opportunities, facilities and space to develop their potential,” he said.
