TAMBUNAN: Sabah-born karate exponent Adeola Fay Robert delivered Malaysia’s first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after winning the women’s kumite under-55kg event on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old from Tambunan defeated Iran’s Fatemehzahra Saeidabadi 6-4 in the final at Toyohashi Gymnasium.
Adeola had earlier beaten Kazakhstan’s Bella Samasheva 5-4 in the semi-final, after recording wins over Kuwait’s Asrar Jasem and Uzbekistan’s Sevinch Rakhimova in the earlier rounds.
The gold came on her Asian Games debut and follows her bronze at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
Her victory also ended Malaysia’s wait for a women’s karate gold at the Asian Games since Syakilla Salni won the event in 2014.
