SEREMBAN: Tan Yee Lee’s (pic) certification as Malaysia’s first female dragon and lion dance coach marks a breakthrough for women in traditional cultural arts, Says reported.

Affectionately known as Master Tan, she was officially certified by the Malaysia Book of Records for her pioneering achievement.

Tan, who coaches at the Rantau Dragon and Lion Dance Association, said the recognition shows that cultural arts are not restricted by gender.

Rasah MP Cha Kee Chin, who attended the ceremony, congratulated her and noted that although the art form originated in China, it has matured significantly in Malaysia and is no longer exclusive to the Chinese Malaysian community.

He added that the association has 40 senior members, 80 per cent of whom are Indian Malaysian, and said lion and dragon dance has become a cultural asset shared by all Malaysians that fosters social unity, harmony and multicultural inclusion.
