
KUALA LUMPUR – National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei lived up to expectations after being crowned National Sportsman and Sportswoman at the 2025 National Sports Awards (ASN) held this morning.
The achievement also saw the duo create history as the first mixed doubles pair to win the prestigious honour.
Adding to the significance of the accomplishment, Tang Jie and Ee Wei secured the award just seven days after being named Best Athletes at the SAM-100PLUS Awards last Wednesday.
The pair enjoyed a remarkable 2025 campaign, highlighted by becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles combination to capture the World Championships title. They also claimed the Australian Open crown and finished runners-up at the China Masters.
Tang Jie emerged ahead of four other nominees comprising wushu athlete Si Shin Peng, pencak silat exponent Muhammad Khairi Abib Azhar, tenpin bowling star Muhammad Rafiq Ismail and bodybuilder Abdul Aziz Ahmad.
Ee Wei, meanwhile, overcame competition from wushu exponents Tan Cheong Min and Pang Pui Yee, lawn bowls player Emma Firyana Saroji and tenpin bowler Natasha Mohamed Roslan.
In the Paralympic category, para-cyclist Mohammad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin won the National Paralympic Sportsman award, beating defending winners Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and Datuk Abdul Latif Romly.
Para swimmer Lim Carmen was named National Paralympic Sportswoman after surpassing fellow nominees Jariah Zakaria and Parameswary Kashinathan.
The ceremony took place at the National Sports Council (NSC) and prizes were presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Recipients of the National Sportsman, Sportswoman, Paralympic Sportsman and Paralympic Sportswoman awards each received a trophy, subsidiary trophy, certificate of appreciation and RM20,000 in prize money.
Elsewhere, the national sepak takraw squad captured the Men’s Team Award, while the Women’s Team Award went to the national wushu team. - May 19, 2026
