Kota Kinabalu: The Government has been urged to add a BAS.MY stop at Tanjung Aru town to improve public transport access for residents and tourists in the area.
Tanjung Aru Assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong said the town already had a bus stop but residents of Tanjung Aru, Tanjung Aru Baru, Tanjung Aru Tengah and surrounding areas still have to travel to the main road, including the Aeropod area, to access BAS.MY services.
He said adding a stop at Tanjung Aru town would benefit residents, particularly senior citizens, students and families, while giving tourists another public transport option to Tanjung Aru and Tanjung Aru Beach.
Wong said the proposal did not necessarily require a new route, as an existing BAS.MY route could potentially be adjusted to include the additional stop.
He said wider use of BAS.MY could also help reduce reliance on private vehicles and ease traffic congestion in Kota Kinabalu.
“Tanjung Aru town is also part of Kota Kinabalu. Public transport should be closer, more convenient and accessible to the people,” he said.
BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu, locally known as the “Pink Bus”, is a modern stage bus service implemented under the Federal Government’s Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme.
The service is free for senior citizens and students.
It currently operates eight fixed routes (S01 to S08), connecting KK Sentral with the city centre, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Inanam, Sepanggar, Menggatal, Penampang and the airport.
