TAWAU: The gathering of 219 comedians worldwide for the Borneo International Clown Convention here reflects growing interest in the performing arts and ability to connect people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Arifin said it also demonstrated that clowning is much more than entertainment.
“It is a meaningful art form that brings happiness, inspires creativity and creates connections among people from different cultures, languages and backgrounds,” he said.
His speech was delivered by his assistant Dr. Andi Md Shamsureezal in the BICC Gala Night at CC café, Wednesday night.
Jafry said laughter is a universal language. It crosses cultural, linguistic and geographocal boundaries. A simple smile can bring encouragement to a child, comfort to someone who is unwell and hope to a person facing a difficult situation.
“Sabah is well known for its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and warm hospitality. I believed such BBIC event add another exciting dimension to Sabah’s tourism, arts and cultural landscape.
“This convention helps to promote Sabah as a destination for arts, culture, creativity and international events. It also provides valuable opportunities for local performers, young people and members of the community to learn from experienced professionals and develop new skills.
“I am especially pleased that Tawau has been chosen as the host city for this convention. I hope that our international guests have had the opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of the people of Tawau.”Organising Director of the Borneo International Clown Convention (BICC) 2026, Donny Ngu Ngok Yong, said, Tawau made history by organising BICC for the very first time in Tawau.
This gathering would not have been possible without the trust, support and collaboration of our government agencies, strategic partners, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who believed in this vision.
Donny said, BICC is more than a convention but it is where friendship begins, where creativity meets compassion and where laughter becomes a language that connects people across cultures.
There were 219 participants, comprising 61 international participants from 12 countries and 158 Malaysian participants. Also present was the BICC convention Consultant cum the Past South East Asia Regional Director of World Clown Association Tee Kam Bee.
