KOTA BELUD: A ship engine technician died after a 13.5- metre fall into a tank at an offshore platform off here at 2pm on Sunday.
The 51-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) after arriving via a helicopter.
Kota Belud District Acting Police Chief ASP Tajuddin Padis said the victim was said to have been asked to check the oil levels in the vessel’s tank before falling in through an open lid.
“Another individual who saw the incident reported it to the ship’s captain and a search and rescue operation was carried out.

“The victim arrived at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 9.40pm. He was confirmed dead by medical officers,” he said.
The case has been classified as sudden death (SDR). The body was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for an autopsy.
