A teenage boy has been hospitalized after allegedly consuming poison-laced biscuits found at the fence of a village farm on Friday. According to Kemaman District Police Chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan, the incident occurred around 2 PM when the 13-year-old boy from Kampung Air Putih was on his way to a nearby river to fish.
Superintendent Hanyan explained that the boy encountered the biscuits, which were inside a plastic bag while passing by the farm. After eating them, he collapsed and lost consciousness. The boy was discovered by his friend's father, who found him lying unconscious on the ground. He was initially taken to a nearby health clinic before being rushed to Kemaman Hospital for emergency treatment. As of now, the boy is in stable condition and continues to receive medical care in the hospital ward.
The authorities are currently investigating the case under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, which addresses offences related to child abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exposure.
This incident is reminiscent of a recent tragedy in Kulim, Kedah, where two young siblings, Muhammad Akil Syauqi Nur Sufyan and Muhammad Luth Syauqi, aged three and two respectively, died after consuming keropok (snacks) believed to have been laced with rat poison. These snacks were hung on a wire fence in a garden, intended to deter wild monkeys.
These alarming incidents highlight the critical need for vigilance regarding potential hazards in our surroundings, particularly those involving children. Authorities are urging the public to be cautious and report any suspicious items or activities that could pose a danger. Community awareness and proactive measures are essential to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of children and preventing further incidents of this nature.
The recent cases in Kemaman and Kulim serve as stark reminders of the importance of safeguarding our environment, especially for the youngest and most vulnerable members of society. By working together, communities can help create a safer space for everyone, minimizing the risk of such dangerous encounters.
