Teen driver killed in Besut crash as police detain 4x4 motorist for suspected drug use

A TEENAGE boy was killed in a collision involving a four-wheel-drive vehicle in Besut after the other driver allegedly veered erratically across the road while under the influence of drugs.

The victim, identified as Muhammad Azmil Hakimi Abdullah, 16, from Kampung Bukit Payong in Jerteh, died at the scene following the crash on Jalan Bukit Payong at approximately noon on Thursday.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle had tested positive for ketamine during an initial urine screening conducted after the incident.

Md Sani Md Saleh said officers were alerted to the two-vehicle collision by members of the public before a police team was dispatched to the location.

“Investigations found that the victim’s car was travelling in its own lane before the driver noticed a four-wheel-drive vehicle from the opposite direction being driven in an unstable manner,” he said in a statement on Friday.

“Upon reaching the location, the 4x4 vehicle suddenly entered the victim’s lane.

“The victim attempted to avoid a collision by moving into the opposite lane, but at the same moment the four-wheel-drive vehicle returned to its original lane, causing both vehicles to collide,” he added.

The impact left the teenager with severe injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was later transported to Besut Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police confirmed that the four-wheel-drive driver has been detained and taken to the Besut District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division for further action.

“The driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” Md Sani said.

He added that the fatal crash itself is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Authorities have appealed for witnesses or individuals with information regarding the incident to contact investigating officer Inspector Noraini Muhammad Zin at 013-4384239.

Police also reminded motorists to remain cautious on the roads and comply fully with traffic regulations to ensure public safety. - May 29, 2026
