KOTA MARUDU: A 15-year-old boy, Jonell Von John, died after being electrocuted while spearfishing in a river at Kampung Minansad on Thursday.
According to District Police Chief Supt. Simiun Lomudin, the victim was found unconscious in the river holding a severed live cable, believed to have been exposed after a tree fell.
The incident occurred about 1km from the victim’s home. He had gone to the river with three friends, and around 8 PM, one of them alerted his father.
The victim was confirmed dead at the scene at 10:02 PM. Firefighters retrieved the body, and no foul play was detected. The case is classified as sudden death.
