KOTA KINABALU - Refusing to attend Quranic classes, a teenage girl concocted a story of being abducted in the area.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said that they had detected a viral case on social media since Thursday regarding a teenager who claimed to be a victim of abduction but managed to escape.
"The police found that it was purely a fabricated story; the 'abduction' tale was merely because she refused to attend Quranic classes," he said in a statement on Thursday night.
In this regard, Kasim advised the public, especially teenagers, not to fabricate crime-related stories as it could cause panic in the community.
"Moreover, it could also be considered an offence to make a false report.
"The public is also urged not to upload any pictures or statements that could cause anxiety and distress to the local community," he said.
Earlier, a post on Facebook went viral claiming that a teenager had stated that she was abducted before managing to free herself and being found by members of the public around Kota Kinabalu.
