KUALA SELANGOR - Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz praises Sungai Semilang villagers’ efforts in generating income from other sources besides fishing.
He said there were seven more fishing piers in the Kuala Selangor Parliament and the residents here were also able to multiply their income through the tourism sector.
"I am amazed with the villagers who once depended on fishing, now venturing into tourism by bringing tourists to the Sky Mirror (reflective water), eagle feeding as well as having homestay businesses.
"The villagers also formed a community by selling fresh seafood, crochet accessories and snacks among others and gained between RM400 and RM500 a month,” he said after visiting the villagers and fishermen at the jetty in Sungai Semilang, Jeram, here on Friday.
Zafrul said the government will continue to help fishermen increase their incomes.
He also urged all fishermen to apply for incentives and subsidies where the government provided allowances of RM200 for 12 months.
"The government raised RM100 million subsidies and incentives for fishermen in Malaysia.
"I hope this message will reach all the fishermen in Kuala Selangor so that they could apply for the incentive," he said.
In the 2023 Budget, Zafrul announced an allocation of RM1.8 billion for fishing incentives, an increase of RM100 million from the previous allocation.
