Tenom: Melalap Assemblyman Datuk Jamawi Jaafar appealed to social media users and the wider community to respect the privacy and dignity of those involved, especially the young victim in a school bullying case and let the law take its course.
“Circulating the video only causes further harm to the victim and her family. We must step back and allow the police to carry out their work without disruption,” he said.
He also emphasised the need for schools and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to step up anti-bullying measures and awareness programmes, stressing that prevention is key to stopping such incidents from happening again.
Tenom police confirmed they have launched a formal investigation after receiving a report lodged on June 23, following the spread of videos online.
District police chief Supt Azmir Abdul Razak said the case is being probed under Section 325 and Section 507B of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Initial checks show the incident took place on June 11 inside a school hostel in the district. The female student suffered injuries and has been sent to hospital.
Three people have already been called to assist police — including the alleged perpetrator and those suspected of recording and sharing the footage — while relevant items have been seized for evidence.
