A MAN died after being shot by his own brother using a homemade weapon in an incident in Kampung Kangkawang, Tenom, on Sunday.
In the incident at about 8 am, the 54-year-old victim was reported to have suffered eight gunshot wounds to the body, while the 57-year-old suspect, who acted aggressively and refused to surrender, was also confirmed dead after being shot during an operation at the scene.
Tenom District Police Chief, Superintendent Azmir Abd Razak, said police were informed of a shooting incident involving civilians in the village.
"The incident involved the victim, who is the younger brother of the suspect and suffered eight gunshot wounds to the back of the body.
“Acting on the information, a team of three officers, along with members from the Tenom District Police Headquarters (IPD) rushed to the scene and upon arrival, villagers informed them that the suspect was inside the house holding a bakakuk (shotgun) and threatening to shoot anyone who approached,” he said.
He added that his team surrounded the suspect’s house and ordered him to come out and surrender three times, but the orders were ignored.
“Several tear gas shells were then fired into the house to push the suspect out, but the suspect was still adamant before running towards the kitchen while pointing his weapon at one of the police officers.
“Following that, a police officer then fired three shots in self-defence after the suspect threatened the team’s safety.
“The shots hit the suspect’s right arm, left chest and left rib. The police team then stormed into the house and found the suspect lying in the kitchen with his firearm by his side,” he said.
Azmir added that the inspection found that the bakakuk weapon still had one live bullet, which was ready to be used.
He said that the police also seized several items, including the bakakuk, live bullets, bullet casings and a long machete.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect is said to have mental problems; however, investigations are continuing under Section 302 and Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he said. – March 31, 2026
