HULU TERENGGANU – A 23-year-old woman has been remanded for four days to assist investigations into the discovery of a headless infant’s body at Taman Perumahan Padang Setengge here on Friday.
The remand order, effective from Sunday until Oct 21, was issued by Kuala Berang Magistrate Nur Athirah Hashim to allow further investigations into the case.
Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the suspect was arrested at 3.30pm on Saturday.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth by secretly disposing of a body, regardless of whether the baby died before, during or after birth.
If convicted, the offence carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
The case came to light after another woman reportedly discovered the infant’s remains while washing clothes behind her house at the same housing area.
The remains were described as consisting of one arm and both legs. The woman subsequently informed the Padang Setengge Housing Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).
A post-mortem conducted at the Forensic Unit of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu confirmed that the infant had died more than 24 hours before the body was discovered.
