Previously, we reported that the Terengganu State Government has banned the local horror film “Pulau” from screening in cinemas in the state. Its producer, Fred Chong has since announced that he will appeal the decision and now, the Terengganu Government has responded, saying that it is ready to meet with him to discuss the ban.

As reported by BERNAMA, Terengganu Menteri Besar (MB) Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar asserted that his government will allow the relevant party to present arguments or justifications for the film. This would then be the basis for a possible reevaluation of the ban.

Ahmad Samsuri further stressed that it is the State Government’s responsibility to protect the people’s morals. He thus rejected the view that Terengganu has a backward mentality by banning the film. The Terengganu MB clarified,

“We want to keep Terengganu in a state of progress, blessing and prosperity. It is this blessing that we want to guard so that the people are protected from immoral behaviour,”

As of right now, the Terengganu State Government maintains its decision to ban the film based on the trailer. This is because the trailer was deemed to be inappropriate for the religion and cultural norms of Asian society.

Ahmad Samsuri elaborated,

“His argument that the trailer is not a full representation of the movie is beyond our knowledge. So, let’s wait to see what kind of appeal or justification he (Chong) will give us. We will give him space so as to evaluate the arguments to be presented,”

So, what do you guys think of Terengganu MB’s statement? Do you think the film should be banned in the state or should the ban be lifted? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
