Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is nearing the end of his stay in a residential gambling treatment programme, but his 2026 season remains stuck between the NCAA, the courts and the NFL calendar.

Sorsby has been in treatment since 27 April, and his agent expects him to finish by 1 June.

His strange betting history, including obscure markets like Turkish basketball and Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, turned the case into a national talking point. But now, the question is far simpler: Sorsby needs clarity before the 22 June Supplemental Draft deadline.

Why Sorsby’s betting case drew so much attention

The details of Sorsby’s betting made headlines, with markets ranging from Romanian football to competitive eating. But those are not the details that should shape what comes next.

Sorsby has said he never altered his performance based on bets. He also said his gambling became a problem and that he needed professional help.

Now, the story has shifted from a viral betting saga to a straightforward question about eligibility. There is not much time left before a decision is needed.

Sorsby has two separate battles in front of him. One is personal, which he is addressing through treatment. The other is procedural, and it may decide whether he plays meaningful football in 2026.

Texas Tech needs an answer soon or Sorsby could look elsewhere

Texas Tech has already declared Sorsby ineligible, but says it will start the reinstatement process. That keeps the door open, but it does not bring certainty.

Sorsby has also filed an injunction seeking eligibility, which shows how tight the calendar has become. His lawyers are reportedly pushing for a decision by 15 June.

That date is important. It would leave Sorsby just a week to decide whether to continue fighting for a place at Texas Tech or to enter the Supplemental Draft.

Every day without a decision makes that choice harder.

Texas Tech cannot afford to wait. Sorsby was not just a depth signing, as he threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions for Cincinnati in 2025, adding 580 rushing yards and nine scores on the ground.

That production made him a major transfer. It also makes the unresolved status more damaging for everyone involved.

The Supplemental Draft is a fallback, not an ideal option

If Sorsby does not get eligibility in time, the NFL Supplemental Draft becomes the fallback. But it is not a perfect solution.

Teams bid by round and give up the matching pick in the next year’s draft, making it a riskier process.

The draft has also been quiet in recent years. The last player selected was in 2019, and no one was picked in 2023.

Still, Sorsby cannot afford to miss what may be his only immediate professional option if the NCAA process drags on.

If he waits too long, he could lose the Supplemental Draft route. If he enters it, he likely closes the door on the Texas Tech season he is trying to save.

That is why the oddest bets should not distract from the clearest point. Sorsby’s future is no longer being shaped mainly by what he wagered on.

It is being shaped by whether anyone gives him a final answer before the clock runs out.
