PUTRAJAYA - Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan has described as irresponsible the opposition bloc’s decision to walk out of the Dewan Rakyat sitting during a briefing on the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) on Monday.

He said all MPs, regardless of which side they were on, should take part in the debate, examine the issues and ask questions in order to find the best decision or solution to the matter.

"When MPs walk out instead of taking part in the debate, I believe that is not a responsible course of action," he told reporters after attending the Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) excellent service awards ceremony here today.

He added that the authorities should be given room to continue their investigations and take appropriate action in accordance with the law following the release of the RCI report.

"We need to respect the legal process so that it can be carried out properly for the benefit of all," he said.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli said he had yet to receive any information regarding former Auditor-General Tan Sri Dr Madinah Mohamad’s claim that she was not called to testify during the RCI proceedings despite being present on the appointed date.

He also said that the proposed comprehensive amendments to the Tabung Haji Act 1995, including provisions on the powers of the minister and TH chairman, were being fine-tuned with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the act provides a sound governance framework for TH in the future.

"We will table the amendments to the Tabung Haji Act 1995 in Parliament for approval, but before that, they need to receive the endorsement of the Cabinet," he said. - BERNAMA
