KUALA LUMPUR - Thailand is confident of achieving its US$30 billion bilateral trade target with Malaysia by 2027, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.
He said Malaysia is Thailand's largest trading partner in ASEAN, with bilateral trade currently reaching approximately US$28 billion.
"We are confident that we will achieve our US$30 billion target very soon with the cooperation that we are working together right now.
"We will meet among the joint trade committee to set a new, more ambitious trade target," Anutin told a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after the memorandum of understanding (MoU) exchange ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex, Putrajaya, today.
Anutin also said the country will fully support the efforts to enhance regional value chains and supply chains by building on the complementary strengths of the two economies.
"Looking ahead, we will focus on food security, energy security and digital economy, including high-tech industries," said the Thai prime minister.
Commenting on the bilateral trade target, Anwar said Malaysia will work hard to achieve the target, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) focusing on the effort.
"We must begin with the fundamental issues of economy and trade to strengthen friendship and collaboration in all fields, including tourism," he said.
Anwar held a bilateral meeting with Anutin at the Perdana Putra Complex to review the progress of Malaysia-Thailand bilateral relations and discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation in various fields.
Anutin, who is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia beginning today at the invitation of Anwar, arrived at 11.11 am at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
This is Anutin's first visit to Malaysia since his reappointment as prime minister in March 2026, aiming to further strengthen the close bilateral relations between the two countries and deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. - BERNAMA
