Jack Nicklaus has been a real mentor for Rory McIlroy throughout his long and illustrious career to date.

Nicklaus played a huge role in McIlroy’s early success, after giving the Northern Irishman some brilliant advice just weeks before his first PGA Tour win.

This week, McIlroy is back where it all started for him at Quail Hollow, as he attempts to win on the PGA Tour for the 31st time.

Rory McIlroy joined Jack Nicklaus and only four other men in April 2025, when he became the sixth male golfer in history to complete the career Grand Slam.

Nicklaus has given McIlroy plenty of advice throughout the years, but it must be said that not all of it has been received well by the man from Holywood, Northern Ireland.

For instance, the Golden Bear once advised McIlroy to have a week off before playing in majors, something that the 37-year-old did not agree with.

However, one piece of advice that the 18-time major champion gave McIlroy back in 2010 clearly resonated with him.

What Jack Nicklaus told Rory McIlroy before his first PGA Tour win at Quail Hollow

McIlroy is a four-time winner of the Truist Championship, and he’ll be looking to add to that tally at Quail Hollow this week.

It was 16 years ago now when the Northern Irishman announced himself to the world by shooting a final round 62 to win at Quail Hollow.

However, without Nicklaus’ advice, McIlroy may never have won in Charlotte that week.

When speaking during a video posted to the official PGA Tour X account, the 18-time major winner revealed the advice he gave McIlroy just two weeks before he won at Quail Hollow in 2010.

He first came to me when he was 19 years old, and he was playing in the Honda Tournament.

Somebody suggested that maybe he ought to come over and have lunch with me.

So he came over, we talked. He was having trouble finishing golf tournaments. Rory was like, ‘I can’t finish. I cant seem to do the right thing in the last nine holes of the tournament to finish’.

So we talked about it. Not only about being positive, but being patient. Just be patient.

You know, I remember Joe Black, who ran the Tour years ago, came to me. I was having trouble finishing up during my first year on tour.

I had three seconds before I won the U.S. Open. Joe said, ‘Jack, just be patient’. He said, ‘You’ll shoot that 32 or 33 of the last nine holes, and you’ll win your golf tournament’.

Couple weeks later, he went off to Charlotte.

I think he shot 63 (was actually a 62) in the last round. So I dropped him a note, and I said, ‘I told you to be patient, but this is ridiculous’.

Rory McIlroy has already cemented legendary status in the game

Nicklaus’ words obviously resonated with McIlroy, and he hasn’t looked back since.

He is now one of only 10 golfers in the history of the game to have won six majors and 30 PGA Tour titles.

He has played on eight Ryder Cup teams for Europe, with six of them ending up in victory.

Rory McIlroy may not be able to match Jack Nicklaus’ records in the game whenever he decides to hang up his clubs.

However, he has already ensured that he will go down as a real legend of the game, whatever happens between now and the end of his career.

The only question that remains is whether he will be able to maintain his current levels of motivation throughout the next decade or so.

So, how far can McIlroy go? Only time will tell in that regard.
