During his five years in power, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah acknowledged that he did not accept the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's pay.
According to Harian Metro, His Majesty discussed the challenging circumstances of the early years of taking on the post of head of state, which included uncertainty about the role and position that needed to be played in addition to the political unrest of the day.
Al-Sultan Abdullah recalled that when he was first appointed to enter the Istana Negara on January 31, 2019, he was unaware of his official position as head of state.
"When I think back, my first impression of the Istana Negara was pleasant. This is a result of my entering a role for which I was unsure of my own responsibilities.
"I had only been the Sultan of Pahang for fifteen days when I was appointed, and I still didn't know a lot of things. After that, I was named the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Since I had no prior expertise, it was challenging for me, but I picked things up slowly.
"In addition to the four Prime Ministers who have been in the five years I have been Agong, who am I compared to those with experience, but I ask, learn, and read a lot," stated His Majesty.
The Queen Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandaria, was also in attendance. Al-Sultan Abdullah became the nation's leader on January 31, 2019.
After that, on January 31, the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor, was crowned. He would hold the position for five years.
Additionally, the Council of Rulers decided to designate Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, effective on the same day and for a period of five years.
According to Al-Sultan Abdullah, His Majesty spent nearly an hour attending 157 pre-cabinet sessions during his time as Yang di-Pertuan Agong. These meetings were shifted from Wednesdays to Tuesdays.
