Estadio Azteca gave Mexico the kind of World Cup opening atmosphere that can make a home tournament feel alive from the first whistle.

Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa mattered on the table, but the setting made it feel bigger than three points.

The noise, color, and nervous release all came together inside one of football’s most iconic stadiums. This was not a quiet opening night waiting for the tournament to warm up.

Estadio Azteca atmosphere powers Mexico World Cup opener

As World Cup HQ showed, the energy inside Estadio Azteca was electric as Mexico fans celebrated the World Cup opener against South Africa.

The clip captured the kind of scene that makes the Azteca different. Supporters were packed into the stands, green paper circles flew through the air, and the stadium looked like it was moving with every chant.

That detail mattered because Mexico was not just playing a match. It was carrying the pressure of being a co-host, opening the tournament at home, and trying to start Group A without slipping on the biggest possible stage.

Julián Quiñones settled those nerves quickly. His ninth-minute goal gave Mexico the early lead and turned the stadium from loud to almost uncontrollable.

Raúl Jiménez added the second in the 67th minute, giving Mexico breathing room and allowing the crowd to enjoy the final stretch with more belief than anxiety.

The match still had chaos. South Africa had Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane sent off, while César Montes was also shown a late red card for Mexico.

Mexico win sends Group A warning before Korea Republic test

Mexico now sits on three points with a plus-two goal difference after the 2-0 win, putting Javier Aguirre’s side in early control of Group A.

South Africa have the opposite problem. The result leaves them with no points, a minus-two goal difference, and suspension issues before their next match against Czechia in Atlanta.

Mexico’s next game comes against Korea Republic on June 18 at Estadio Guadalajara, and the challenge will be different. The emotion of the opener must now become control.

Still, the image that will last is the Azteca bouncing in green. Mexico needed a strong start, and their fans made sure the night felt unforgettable.
