The real facts behind Netflix’s Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story

Who was Fred West?

Fred West was born into a family of farm workers in Herefordshire in 1941. He worked as an ice cream van driver in the 1960s in Glasgow and lived at Maclellan Street in Kinning Park. Still married to his first wife, Rena Costello, Fred often attempted to flirt and mingle with women and young girls.

It is believed he may have started his killing spree in Scotland before shifting to Gloucester. The Mirror states that there are conjectures that he likely claimed victims in Scotland and buried their bodies in his allotments.

Ultimately, he was forced to flee from Glasgow after he locked horns with the city’s gangs and accidentally killed a 3-year-old boy in the Gorbals. He came to Gloucester in 1962.

West escaped with his daughters, compelling Rena and her friend Anne McFall to go after him. She eventually sought John McLachlan, their companion, for help to get her kids back.

Unfortunately, Anne fell victim to Fred’s charm and tipped him off about Rena and John’s plan. Ultimately, West succeeded in escaping again, leaving all their efforts to go in vain. Later, he ended up murdering Anne, merely 18 and pregnant, in May 1967.

Rose West and her murder spree

Fred met Rosemary West in Gloucester in 1969, who would become his second wife in 1972. His killing nature rubbed off on her, and during the investigation, Rose was found guilty of killing Fred’s 8-year-old daughter, Charmaine, in 1971.

Fred and Rose carried out over 10 brutal murders, along with reports of sexual abuse at the notorious ‘House of Horrors’ on Cromwell Street. She also had deep-rooted dark fantasies; three of her eight children were of men she slept with behind Fred’s back.

The harrowing true tale behind Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story takes us into the demented relationship between the couple themselves.

Their demented journey began when Rose was 15 and Fred was 27, and they realised that they shared dark fantasies. They started a family in Gloucester with two of Fred’s children from his previous relationship.

They often hired babysitters and went out to satisfy their desires. But when Fred was put behind bars for 10 months for theft, Rose had to take care of their stepdaughters along with her own child. It was during this time that her darkest desire surfaced, and she killed Charmaine. Surprisingly, instead of lamenting, Fred was “excited,” and he confessed to Rose about the double murder of Rena and their pregnant nanny.

They got married in 1972 and moved to the bigger Cromwell address. It became a den of sex parties and kinky affairs. They shared an affinity for sexual sadomasochism that began with Fred asking Rose to sleep with other men as he watched from another room.

While they portrayed themselves as a happy, loving couple, behind closed doors, it was a different story. Even their own children described Rose as physically abusive, who punished them in appalling, cruel ways; two daughters accused Fred of sexual abuse.

How did the crimes come to light?

According to Netflix, it started as a joke that Fred and Rose West would tell their children in Gloucester. In 1994, the social services alerted the police when they learned that the couple’s children were often told that if they misbehaved, they would end up under the patio like their sister, Heather.

Soon, the police started investigating the Wests’ house at 25 Cromwell Street. They not only dug up Heather’s dismembered body but also found remains of other people, spread across the garden, garage and cellar. They also found Charmaine’s remains beneath a concrete floor at the couple’s previous Gloucester residence on Midland Road.

The prolific murderers were arrested at their house as more shocking details emerged from their house of horrors.

Besides McFall, Rena, Charmaine and Heather, the Wests’ victims include Lynda Gough, Carole Ann Cooper, Lucy Partington, Therese Siegenthaler, Shirley Hubbard, Juanita Mott, Shirley Anne Robinson and Alison Chambers.

In 1994, when the police found out about the matter, Fred tried to protect his wife with all his might.

While Fred was arrested immediately, Rose was also taken in eventually and was slapped with multiple murder charges.

Fred West died of suicide on New Year’s Eve in 1995 in his cell and left a last love letter for his wife with a chilling request: He wished to be laid with Charmaine, Heather and Rena and wanted his “darling” Rose to come to him too.

Rose West has pleaded innocent for 30 long years and continues to serve a life imprisonment at HM Prison New Hall.
